Research Physicist

Job Role Summary

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company has an immediate opening for a scientist at all career stages in the Engineering Physics Section at its Corporate Strategic Research Laboratories located in Annandale, New Jersey.  The Engineering Physics Section is a multidisciplinary group of scientists conducting fundamental research in physics pertaining to the needs of the energy industry with particular focus in the areas of flow in porous media, wave propagation, solid-fluid interactions, multi-scale phenomena, granular physics, and rock deformation and failure. The work environment is highly collaborative, and candidates are expected to work in partnership with experimental, theoretical and computational scientists across the organization. Successful candidates will be expected to become scientific leaders in creating and utilizing advanced experimental or computational techniques to develop the deep conceptual understanding of physical phenomena needed to address technical challenges in the energy industry.

Job Requirements

The applicant should have a Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil), or a closely related field (such as Material Science).  Candidates should have demonstrated the ability to solve physical problems by developing and implementing novel concepts utilizing one or more of the following:  theoretical models, experiments, or computational models.  Excellent oral and written presentation skills, along with a strong record of publications and presentations, commensurate with career stage, are required.  The ability of the candidate to grow into new science areas will be a critical characteristic, as will the ability to work across disciplines and organizations.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Interests in one or more of the following areas are advantageous:  soft-matter physics, wave phenomena, fluid dynamics, geophysics, pattern formation, nonlinear dynamics, micro-fluidics, granular physics, rock/soil mechanics, electrodynamics, scattering, physical chemistry, statistical mechanics, metamaterials, and condensed-matter physics.  Experience in mathematical modeling and numerical programming are desirable.


ExxonMobil's Corporate Strategic Research (CSR) laboratory is a powerhouse in energy research focusing on fundamental science that can lead to technologies having a direct impact on solving our biggest energy challenges. Our facilities are centrally located in scenic Annandale, New Jersey, approximately one hour from both New York City and Philadelphia.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
